Volleyball Set to Open Tournament Play at WV State

ATHENS, W. Va. – The Concord University volleyball team begins West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament competition 7:00 p.m. Monday night when it travels to Institute, W. Va. to take on West Virginia State a first round match.

How They Got Here: The Mountain Lions qualified for the conference tournament for the third consecutive year after finishing their 2012 regular season with an overall record of 15-18 and a WVIAC mark of 6-8. Concord enters the tournament as the 10th seed.

West Virginia State earned the seventh seed and the right to host the playoff match thanks to a WVIAC record of 8-6 and a 9-16 overall record.

Scouting the Mountain Lions: Concord comes into the match 7-6 in its last 13 matches. CU is 7-5 in road matches this year.

The Mountain Lions' offensive attack features five players with at least 100 kills on the season. Sophomore middle hitter Sarah Jones and sophomore outside hitter Brytni Willis lead the way with 360 kills and 253 kills, respectively. Sophomore middle hitter Jasmin Sutherland (170 kills), freshman middle hitter Kylie Perdue (156 kills) and junior outside hitter Rebecca Lovejoy (103 kills) are also threats.

Sophomores Amanda Walker and Nikki McMillan split CU's setting duties. McMillan has 465 assists on the year followed closely by Walker at 452. Walker also has 35 aces and is one of three Mountain Lions to have served at least 30 aces this season, trailing only sophomore libero Lindsey Smith (43) and Willis (37) for the team-lead. Smith has also tallied a career-high 418 digs and ranks 10th in the league with 3.57 digs per set.

Concord is one of the best blocking teams in the WVIAC, ranking fourth in the conference with 2.03 blocks per set. Sutherland has made a team-high 103 blocks followed by Jones' 80 and Perdue's 73 rejections.

Scouting West Virginia State: The Yellow Jackets ended their regular season losing five of their final eight matches. However, West Virginia State has proven dominant at home where they are 5-1 this season.

West Virginia State is led by Cameron Lewis and Alyssa Graboski. Lewis has produced 268 kills and 61 blocks this year with Graboski chipping in 242 kills and a team-high 68 blocks. Lewis and Graboski have hitting percentages of .294 and .250, respectively. Megan Lucas, West Virginia State's primary setter, has guided the Yellow Jacket attack with 775 assists with 28 aces as well. Jessyca Gooch's 379 digs are a team-best.

Head Coaches: Kate Southcott is in her fourth year at Concord. For her career, Southcott is 50-84 overall and 18-38 in WVIAC matches. The 2012 season has been her best since arriving in Athens. This year's squad is already assured of having the fewest overall losses and most conference wins for the program since 2005.

Shannon Gerencir is in her 11th season at West Virginia State. She has been recognized as the WVIAC's Coach of the Year twice (2005, 2006) and has a career-record of 180-158.

Series History: Since 2002, Concord is 2-12 against West Virginia State including a 3-2 loss to the Yellow Jackets on Nov. 8 (Box Score).

If Concord defeats West Virginia State the Mountain Lions advance to the WVIAC Tournament quarterfinals where they would play second-seeded Seton Hill 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15 in Charleston, W. Va.
