Volleyball Beats West Liberty, Loses to Jesuit

ATHENS, W. Va. - The Concord University volleyball team split a pair of West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matches Saturday. CU took the first match 3-2 from West Liberty, but were defeated by Wheeling Jesuit 3-0 in the second match of the day.

Concord concludes its regular season with a 15-18 overall record and a 6-8 mark in WVIAC contests. The Mountain Lions qualified for the WVIAC Tournament as the conference's 10th seed and will play at West Virginia State 7:00 p.m. Monday in the tournament's opening round.

Brytni Willis earned a double-double with a match-high 16 kills, 10 digs, career-high five blocks, and one ace. Sarah Jones grabbed 12 digs, nine kills, six blocks, and an ace. Jasmin Sutherland and Rebecca Lovejoy each had eight kills. Sutherland also blocked eight balls while Lovejoy had two digs and a block. Kylie Perdue hit seven kills and blocked five balls.

Setter Amanda Walker netted a career-high 29 assists and 11 digs for the double-double. Nikki McMillan had 15 assists, 11 digs, two kills, and two aces also getting a double-double. Libero Lindsey Smith had a mtach-high 22 digs

Concord won the first set with authority, 25-12. The Mountain Lions took the lead early, 4-0 and didn't look back outhitting the Hilltoppers .241 to -.111.

West Liberty answered back in the second set by winning 25-23. The teams had five tie scores and four lead changes.

CU hit a match-high .407 with 13 kills during the third set. The Mountain Lions beat the Hilltoppers with another score of 25-12.

Concord dropped the fourth set, 26-24. The score was tied up 24-24 when West Liberty's Rachel Zeigler put the ball away to give them the serve and with a CU error took the set.

The fifth set decided the match for Concord ending with a score of 15-5. Again, CU came out strong taking a 4-0 lead and never relinquishing it.

Concord showed improvement throughout the match with scores of 25-12, 25-16, and 25-19 but dropped the match to Wheeling Jesuit for each team's second match of the day.

Jones led the team with nine digs, five kills, and four blocks. B. Willis dug six balls, had three kills, and one block. Perdue blocked four balls and had three kills. Lovejoy earned three kills. Sutherland had three blocks, two kills, and one dig. Chelsea Walker also nabbed three digs and a kill. 

Walker led the team with 10 assists and a dig. McMillan grabbed seven assists and six digs.
