ATHENS, W. Va. – The Concord University volleyball team continued its winning ways Tuesday night with a 3-1 victory against Southern Virginia at the Carter Center. The Mountain Lions have now won five of their last six matches and are 4-0 at home this season.
Concord breezed through the first set with a 25-9 victory, but Southern Virginia proved to be a much tougher opponent than the opening set indicated. Concord fought to a 25-22 victory in the second before Southern Virginia netted their first win of the night with a 25-23 triumph in the third set. However, Concord managed to regroup and take the fourth set, 25-19, for the 3-1 victory.
The non-conference win improved Concord's overall record to 8-11 on the year. Southern Virginia's record now stands at 2-10 after the defeat.
Sarah Jones once again led the Concord charge, totaling 14 kills and 11 digs for her fifth double-double of the season. Jones also came up with three blocks. Second only to Jasmin Southerland, who finished with a match-high six rejections.
Kylie Perdue also produced a two-block match for Concord.
Willis added nine kills while
Kylie Perdue ranked third on team with eight kills.
Erin Asbury chipped in seven kills.
In addition to leading Concord with 25 assists, a career-high,
Amanda Walker also had seven digs.
Nikki McMillan added 16 assists as CU's second setter.
Concord's serving game was also on point Tuesday. Six players delivered at least one ace with Willis serving three aces to pace the group.
The Mountain Lions jump back into West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play when they host Alderson-Broaddus at the Carter Center 5:00 p.m. Oct. 5.
