ATHENS, W. Va. - Freshman
Kari Simon scored a goal in the final minutes of the first overtime period to boost the Concord University women's soccer team past West Liberty, 1-0, Tuesday at Anderson Field.
The overtime-victory boosted CU's record to 7-6-2 overall and 4-4-1 in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. With just one WVIAC game remaining on their schedule, the Mountain Lions have 13 points in conference play and are currently ranked sixth in the standings, three points ahead of Seton Hill (8-6-1, 3-3-1 WVIAC). The top six teams in the conference standings at the end of the season advance to the WVIAC Tournament.
The first half proved to be tough for both teams. The Mountain Lions were able to get four shots off while the Hilltoppers took three shots, but neither team was able to tally a goal.
During the second half of play Concord picked up the pace taking seven shots and drawing five corner kicks. West Liberty attempted three shots with nothing from the corner. However, as was the case in the opening half, the second period also ended with both teams without a goal.
Concord made the final decision of the match in overtime during the 99th minute.
Erika Hoff nailed a ball to
Kari Simon who netted her seventh goal of the season to get Concord the 1-0 victory. Hoff earned her first assist of the year on the play. Simon now leads the team in goals scored for the season.
Hoff took a game-high three shots during play. Simon, Stacy Calder,
Abby Barber, and
Alyanna James put out two shots each. CU also had contributions from
Brianne LaFemina,
Madi Ranck,
Sami Spertzel, and
Chloe Barber with one shot apiece.
The Mountain Lion's held West Liberty to just six shots compared to their 15.
Goalkeeper
Kaitlyn Wasylko did not receive any saves due to no shots on goal, but earned her second shut out of the season.
CU faces King College (TN) in a home match-up Friday, October 19. The game is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. at Anderson Field.
