VIENNA, W. Va. – Sophomore
Alyanna James scored a goal in overtime to lead the Concord University women's soccer team to a 2-1 win at Ohio Valley University Saturday.
The victory, Concord's fifth consecutive win, improves the Mountain Lions' record to 6-6-2 overall and 3-4-1 in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The loss drops Ohio Valley's overall record to 2-12-0 and its WVIAC record to 0-7-0.
Concord held advantages over Ohio Valley in shots (18-14), shots on goal (8-5) and corners (5-4).
Freshman
Kari Simon netted CU's first goal of the game. The score was Simon's team-leading sixth goal of the season. In addition to James' goal, her fifth of the season, she also assisted on Simon's score. James' five goals this season are a career-high.
Also helping the CU attack was senior
Erika Hoff, who took a team-high five shots three of which were on goal. Senior
Fiona Mearns added two shots, but saw her two-game scoring streak come to an end.
Sophomore goalie
Kaitlyn Wasylko stopped four shots to pick up the victory.
Concord jumped out to the early 1-0 lead when Simon beat Ohio Valley goalie Brianna Rice in the 23rd minute of competition. The Mountain Lions held onto the one-goal advantage for the following 47 minutes before OVU's Jody Bethune scored to tie the game at 1-1 with just less than 19 minutes to play in regulation.
The Mountain Lions successfully defended four Ohio Valley shot attempts in the final minutes of the second half, but none of their own three shots were able to find the back of the net as the half came to a close with the scored tied at 1-1.
However, just 6:05 into overtime James was able score off of a one-on-one opportunity to earn the win and keep Concord's winning streak alive. The score was her second game-winning goal of the year.
Concord will have the chance to push its record past the .500 mark for the first time this season 2:00 p.m. Oct. 16 vs. West Liberty at Anderson Field.
