2nd-HALF RUN LIFTS FAIRMONT STATE PAST CU

Every basketball team, of course, wants to outscore its opponent in any given.

But that task can be difficult when facing one of the top-scoring teams in the nation.

Concord's men's basketball team faced Fairmont State – ranked 11th in the nation in points per game – Saturday afternoon, and dropped an 84-82 result in a WVIAC matchup at the Carter Center in Athens.

The visitors broke away from a 60-60 tie with a 16-6 run midway through the 2nd half to hand the Mountain Lions their first home conference loss of the season.

Concord took a 39-34 lead into halftime and held a 47-40 advantage early in the 2nd half.  But the Fighting Falcons (5-6, 3-4) came back to tie the game, then went on their deciding rally.

stalle just missed a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.  Point guard Mike Boyd -finished with 11 points, five rebounds and a game-high six assists.

Concord was without senior guard Cory Willard, who missed the game due to family considerations.  Willard leads the nation in three-point shooting percentage (.603).

Isaac Thornton – the WVIAC's 3rd-leading scorer – led
FSU with 24 points.  Steve Custis, ranked 8th in the nation in scoring, added 20 points.

The Mountain Lions shot .508 (32-63) from the field, including .522 (12-23) from three-point range.  Fairmont State went .517 (30-58) from the floor and .474 (9-19) from beyond the arc.  The visitors also attempted 33 free throws, making 15, while Concord was 6-13.

Concord outrebounded FSU 46-30, but committed 12 turnovers to the Falcons' four.



Up next for Concord (7-5, 4-4) is a visit to Ohio Valley for a WVIAC contest on Monday, January 9.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm in Vienna, WV.
