MBB: SLOW START, LONG DAY

CU ENDS BUSY WEEK WITH LOSS AT WHEELING JESUIT

Action Shot at WVSU
One of the pitfalls of playing on the road, especially a long way from home, is starting a game slowly and the difficulties it can present.

Concord's men's basketball encountered that very pitfall Saturday afternoon in Wheeling, WV.  The Mountain Lions committed five turnovers in the first four minutes and spotted Wheeling Jesuit an early double-digit lead in what wound being a 92-80 defeat at the McDonough Center.

Senior guard Javaughn Acree-Manuel scored a team season-high 35 points for the Mountain Lions.

CU took an early 6-5 lead, only to see WJU embark on a 19-6 run that put them ahead 24-12 less than seven minutes after tipoff.

The Mountain Lions countered with a 14-3 rally to close within a single point at 27-26, but the Cardinals answered with 13 unanswered points that staked them to a 40-26 lead with 4:37 left before halftime.  CU would get no closer than nine points after that.

Acree-Manuel (below left) shot 12-24 from the field, 5-14 from three-point range and 6-6 from the free throw line in leading the Concord attack.  Mike Boyd added ten points, seven rebounds and five assists.

Steve Catich scored 22 points to lead WJU (9-5, 6-3).
Concord outrebounded the Cardinals 42-29, but committed 22 turnovers to WJU's 15.  Saturday marked the end of a stretch in which CU played three road games in six days.
Up next for Concord (8-7, 5-6) is a return to the Carter Center for a matchup with WVIAC foe Davis & Elkins.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm.

The game, part of a doubleheader with the CU women's team, will be broadcast on ESPN Radio 102.3 The Ticket (WMTD, Hinton/Princeton/Beckley).
