WBB: BAD CASE OF THE MONDAYS

LADY LIONS UPSET AT OHIO VALLEY

Maybe it was the cold, rainy, gloomy weather.  Maybe it was the phase of the moon.  Maybe it was simply a really bad case of the Mondays.

The Concord women's basketball just didn't look like its usual self in its WVIAC matchup at Ohio Valley, falling victim to a 78-63 upset at the Snyder Events Center in Vienna, WV.

CU was ahead 24-15 midway through the opening half and up 33-30 with four minutes left before the break.  However, Ohio Valley closed out the half with seven unanswered points, and although Concord tied the game at 37-37 shortly after the break, the Fighting Scots seized the momentum with a game-turning 15-3 run.

Playing without starting shooting guard Camisha Alexander, and with WVIAC Player of the Year candidate Jolysa Brown saddled with foul trouble, Concord shot just .294 (10-34) from the field in the 2nd half.

Concord went into Monday's contest with the best rebounding margin in the conference, but Ohio Valley (8-7, 4-5) out-boarded the Lady Lions 54-26, including a 22-6 advantage in offensive rebounds.  The Fighting Scots also grabbed 12 steals.

The defeat snapped CU's six-game conference winning streak and dropped the Lady Lions to 10-3, 7-2.

Amanda Smith paced Concord with 18 points.  Brown added 15 points, six assists, three steals and three blocked shots before fouling out.  Freshman Rachel Artrip came off the bench to chip in 11 points, sinking 3-4 from three-point range.

Two Ohio Valley players posted double-doubles – Shante Cummings (11 points, 14 rebounds) and Dekeisha Mann (12 points, 11 rebounds).

The Fighting Scots had 21 assists on their 29 made field goals.

Up next for the Lady Lions is another WVIAC road test.  Concord visits West Virginia State on Thursday, January 12 for a 5:30 tip-off at Fleming Hall in Institute, WV.

The game will be broadcast on ESPN Radio 102.3 The Ticket (WMTD Hinton/Princeton/Beckley) starting with the “Mountain Lions Preview Show” at 5:10.  Streaming audio is expected to be available at www.theticket102.com.
