WOMEN'S SOCCER: LIKE THE WEATHER

CU GETS HOT AT RIGHT TIMES IN WIN OVER A-B

Nicole Dirnagl 314 x 225
The weather on the Concord campus in Athens on Wednesday afternoon literally ran hot and cold.  Stretches of sunshine and heat traded places with spells of chilly cloudiness.

Technically, it wasn't a beautiful day, although it felt like one for Concord's Women's Soccer team.

Riding an attack that got hot at just the right times, the Lady Lions set a season-high for goals in a 3-1 victory over WVIAC rival Alderson-Broaddus at Anderson Field.

A-B controlled the pace of play shortly after kickoff, but Concord scored first.  Erika Hoff sent a bouncing pass to Nicole Dirnagl against the right side of the Battlers' defense.  Dirnagl settled the ball, then curved a beautiful left-footed shot into the upper right corner of the net that put CU ahead 1-0 in the 10th minute.

The Lady Lions would try just one more shot until the closing minutes of the first half, when their attack heated up again.  Sami Spertzel lofted a free kick toward the A-B net, and Erika Hoff somehow found her way through the crowd to head the ball into the net.  Hoff's goal, with just 12 seconds left before halftime, put Concord ahead 2-0.

The CU offense cooled off in the second half as the team assumed a more defensive posture.  But again, the Lady Lions heated up at a good time.  Dirnagl (above left) notched her second goal of the day, directing a through ball into the back of the net in the 74th minute for a 3-0 lead.

Kasie Shoemaker broke up Concord's shutout bid with an unassisted goal  in the 77th minute, but that would be as close as A-B would get.

The Battlers outshot Concord 14-9 and tried 13 corner kicks to none for CU.

Up next for the Lady Lions is a non-conference match at Chowan University on Saturday, October 1.  Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 pm in Murfreesboro, NC.
