VOLLEYBALL: WORKING OVERTIME

CU FALLS TO SVU IN FIVE SETS

Helen Theisen Pass 223 x 314
The Concord Volleyball team began a busy week by putting in some overtime.

The Lady Lions went five sets – two of which went into extra time – but fell at Southern Virginia University in a non-conference match Tuesday night.

SVU downed Concord 18-25, 26-24, 27-25, 28-30, 15-10 at Knight Sports Arena in Buena Vista, VA.

CU hit a robust .321 in winning the first set, and had late leads in the next two, but the Lady Knights rallied to take the second and third sets in extra time.

In the fourth set, Concord fended off elimination by scoring the final three points, including an ace and a kill from freshman Sarah Jones.

The Lady Lions took a 7-4 lead in the decisive fifth set, but SVU answered with seven straight points to go ahead, and they fended off CU's comeback attempts and closed out the match.

Jones and Helen Theisen led Concord with 12 kills each; the duo combined to hit .392.  Theisen (above) also posted 21 assists and ten digs.  Nikki McMillan added 27 assists and 21 digs.

Up next is a quick turnaround, and another potentially long day, for the Lady Lions.

Concord will host a split doubleheader on Wednesday, September 28 at the Carter Center.  First, CU meets Bluefield State in a WVIAC match at 5:00 pm, then takes on WVU Tech in a non-conference match at 7:00.

Admission is free.
