SOPHOMORE PITCHER GETS 2ND WIN IN TWO DAYS IN SPLIT WITH WLU

Brooke Bowling Pitch #3 vs WLU 235 x 240
Every pitching staff needs a “stopper” -- someone reliable who can stop losing streaks, someone who can stop the other team.

Concord's Softball team might just have such a pitcher in Brooke Bowling.

Sunday, for the second time in as many days, the sophomore right-hander threw a complete game to stop Concord from being swept in a WVIAC doubleheader.

Bowling helped the Lady Lions to a 6-1 victory in the second game of their doubleheader in Athens, after the visiting Lady 'Toppers won the first game 4-1.
(Bowling was the winner in CU's 10-5 victory over Wheeling Jesuit on Saturday afternoon.)

Bowling scattered six hits, walking only one and striking out six. She threw 104 pitches while facing  27 batters, just six over the minimum.

She also benefitted from early run support. The Lady Lions scored first, getting two runs in the bottom of the 2nd
With one out, Sheila Davies reached on a hard-hit ball misplayed into an error by Lady 'Toppers SS Felicia Hulslander. Tiffany Kobordo doubled to the gap in right-center field, moving Davies to third base.
Rachel Mack lashed a single to left, scoring Davies and advancing Kobordo to third.
Casey Ord bunted for a single, scoring Kobordo, but got thrown out trying to reach second after WLU had initially thrown the ball to the plate.

A solo home run by Maggie Starr in the top of the 3rd pulled West Liberty within 2-1, but that would be the only run Bowling allowed.

Concord answered promptly in the bottom of the inning. Becca Gleason – the leadoff hitter in CU's lineup – led off with a no-doubt solo home run to right center to make the score 3-1.

The solo shot began a stretch in which the Lady Lions hit hard against WLU starting pitcher Sara Emerich, who had thrown a complete game in the Lady 'Toppers' win in game one.
Katelyn Williams lined a shot toward right, but got robbed on a diving catch by 2B Julianne Wanda. Bowling rocketed a single to right. Stephanie Harper lined a shot toward left, but got robbed on diving catch by SS Felicia Hulslander.
The pivotal moment came when the next batter, Sheila Davies, battled Emerich and drew an eight-pitch full-count walk to keeping the inning alive.
Tiffany Kobordo lined a shot that glanced off Emerich's glove and rolled into short center field. Bowling scored, Davies went to third, and Kobordo's hustled to second for a double. Rachel Mack put down a bunt on the right side of the infield; 1B Angela Johnson fielded it near the circle, but nobody covered first.
Davies crossed the plate, and Kobordo hustled again to score from second. The two-out, two-run infield single gave Concord its final 6-1 lead.

The CU defense then stood up. West Liberty reached Bowling for consecutive singles from Kelsey Martin and Julianne Wanda to start the top of the 4th. Each tried to steal second; each got thrown out by Lady Lions C Kaylyn Klatt. Bowling was in command after that.

Concord was 4-5 with runners in scoring position. Kobordo paced the CU lineup by going 2-3, with two doubles, two runs and an RBI.

In the first game, West Liberty took a 1-0 lead on Angela Johnson's RBI single in the top of the 2nd.

Ord single-handedly tied the game in the bottom of the 3rd. The junior LF led off with a double down the line in left, stole third, and scored on Emerich's wild pitch.

West Liberty pieced together the decisive rally in the top of the 5th. Johnson and Sara Ashmead started the inning with consecutive singles; one out later, Katelyn Kumm reached on a throwing error by Bowling, who was playing second base. That scored Johnson, and later in the inning Starr and Courtney Loe hit RBI singles.
