In a day filled with weather-related delays and rescheduling, Concord's Softball team dropped its WVIAC Tournament opener to the University of Charleston, 5-1, Thursday afternoon in Vienna, WV.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the 1st inning.  UC scored three runs off Concord starting pitcher Tamara Smith, who lasted 1/3 of an inning.  Brooke Bowling came to close out the frame.
Rachael Mack relieved Bowling and allowed only one unearned run in five innings.

Mack drove in Concord's only run in the top of the 5th, with an RBI single that scored Casey Ord.

UC pitcher Stefanie Rossman limited Concord to five hits -- singles by Ord, Mack, Bowling and Stephanie Harper, and a double by Becca Gleason.  Rossman walked one and struck out eight.

Thursday's contest was originally set to begin at 10:00 am. But strong storms Wednesday night pushed back the start time to 2:30 pm.

Concord, the #11 seed in this year's field, falls to 2-5 all-time against UC in tournament play.

BOXSCORE/PLAY-BY-PLAY

The Lady Lions will play an elimination game against #9 Alderson-Broaddus Friday at 10:00 am.
On Thursday, the Battlers scored three runs with two outs in the top of the 7th to defeat #8 Seton Hill 5-4 in a first-round game, then lost 5-1 to #1 seed West Virginia Wesleyan.

Friday will mark the first meeting between CU and A-B this season.  The two squads were scheduled to play a doubleheader last Saturday, but the games were canceled due to rain andn wet grounds at the Battlers' home field in Philippi, WV.

Since 1995, Concord is 0-2 against Alderson-Broaddus in the WVIAC Touranment.  A-B won 6-0 in a semi-final matchup in 1995, and claimed a 3-1 victory in a second day winner's bracket game in 2001.  Both those games were played in Summersville, WV.  The tournament moved to Vienna in 2003.
