LADY LIONS SPLIT ICY DOUBLEHEADER WITH WHEELING JESUIT

CF View vs WJU 1024 x 647

On day in which the weather never stayed the same, it stands to reason that Concord and Wheeling Jesuit would split their WVIAC Softball doubleheader in Athens on Saturday afternoon.

Under cold, windy conditions that varied between sun, rain, sun, snow, sun, sleet, sun, snow and sun – and back again – the visiting Cardinals took the first game, 8-5, while the Lady Lions won the nightcap 10-5.

GAME ONE
BOXSCORE

Tamara Smith Swing vs WJU 314 x 235
In both the 2nd and 5th innings, WJU would score once and Concord answered with two runs. CU took a 4-2 lead into the 6th.

However, the Cardinals busted out for three runs in both the 6th and the 7th to open an 8-4 cushion, and were able to withstand Concord's single run in the bottom of the 7th.

Kaylyn Klatt led the CU offense by going 2-4 with two doubles and an RBI. Casey Ord was 2-3 with a run scored; Stephanie Harper went 1-3 with two RBIs.

WJU's 4-5-6 hitters – Jaime Donato, Caity Ferrell and Olivia Wamsley – combined to go 8-12 with five runs scored and four RBIs.

GAME TWO
BOXSCORE / PLAY-BY-PLAY

The Cardinals took the first lead with a three-run 2nd inning, including a two-run home run by Skylar Berger and an RBI double from Stacey Spicer.

Concord responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning, on consecutive two-out singles by Ericka Davies, Ord, Becca Gleason and Tamara Smith.

The Lady Lions took the lead for good with four runs in the 3rd. Katelyn Williams led off and was hit by a pitch; Sheila Davies followed with a no-doubt two-run home run to left.
Brooke Bowling Swing vs WJU 262 x 235
Klatt singled, and scored on Ericka Davies' double off the wall in right center. Ord singled, moving Ericka Davies to third, and Gleason brought in the inning's final run with a sacrifice fly. Concord led 6-3.

Wheeling Jesuit scored single runs in the 4th and 5th to draw within 6-5, but Gleason lined an RBI single in the bottom of the 5th to stretch CU's advantage to 7-5.

The Lady Lions iced the game -- pardon the pun -- with three runs in the 6th. Brooke Bowling (left) led off by rocketing a triple off the wall in right; one out later, Williams hit a ground ball that Jesuit 2B Wamsley misplayed into an error. Bowling crossed the plate to make the game 8-5.
Another Cardinals error – on 3B Shayna Johnson – allowed Sheila Davies to reach base, and Klatt closed out the scoring with a two-run single down the line in right.

Concord's 17-hit attack featured several stellar performances. Gleason went 3-4 with three RBIs; Ericka Davies was 3-3 with three runs scored; Sheila Davies went 2-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored; Klatt finished 2-4 with two RBIs and two runs; Ord went 3-3 with a run scored.

In the pitching circle, Bowling scattered seven hits and overcame seven walks to get a complete-game victory. The sophomore right-hander struck out seven.

Up next for Concord is a quick turnaround. The Lady Lions host West Liberty in another WVIAC doubleheader tomorrow – Sunday, April 3 – at their home diamond adjacent to Callaghan Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for Noon. Admission is free.
