UNFRIENDLY CONFINES

CU OUTSLUGGED IN LOSS AT WV STATE

West Virginia State's baseball team has earned a reputation as one of the WVIAC's top slugging teams. Especially when they play in their cozy, hitter-friendly home field.

Unfortunately for Concord, the Yellow Jackets enhanced their reputation in Saturday afternoon's matchup between the two squads in Institute.

WVSU would overcome five errors by out-hitting the Mountain Lions 19-15 in a 14-9 victory in the opener of their three-game Southern Division series.

Big Cut 300 x 235
CU struck first with two runs in the top of the 1st, on an RBI single by Kyle Webb and a sacrifice fly from Josh Wenger.

WVSU would strike back with four runs in the bottom of the 2nd, keyed by Bill Smith's two-out, two-run double.

Concord scored once in the 3rd, when Nick Sydnor's single drove in Keith Morrisroe.

The Mountain Lions would push across two unearned runs in the 4th to take a 5-4 lead, but the advantage would not last long.

West Virginia State erupted for eight runs in the 5th. Joey Jobst's two-run, bases-loaded double started the rally; back-to-back home runs from Andrew Pickering and Jason Lewis fueled it further. When the barrage ended, the Yellow Jackets were ahead 12-5 and had the lead for good.

Concord would get a solo home run from Raphael Sanchez in the 6th, an RBI single by Webb in the 7th, and a run-scoring groundout from Jacob Mays and an RBI single by Morrisroe in the 8th.
