CU SWEPT AT CHARLESTON IN RE-SCHEDULED DOUBLEHEADER

The Concord Baseball team's efforts to move up in the WVIAC Southern Division standings suffered a setback Friday afternoon, when the Mountain Lions were swept in a doubleheader at the University of Charleston.

In games originally scheduled to be played in Athens on Saturday, but moved to Charleston and pushed up a day to avoid the threat of bad weather, the last-place Golden Eagles downed CU 4-0 and 10-6.

GAME ONE

Concord threatened immediately, putting runners at the corners with two outs in the top of the 1st, but Keith Morrisroe got picked off at third to end the inning.

Out At First vs SHU 223 x 314
In the bottom of the 1st, the Golden Eagles pieced together three consecutive one-out singles to take a 1-0 lead, although CU starting pitcher Ryan Weatherholtz escaped further damage.

The Mountain Lions put runners and second and third with two outs in the 3rd, but couldn't bring in a run. CU missed again in the 5th, when Nick Sydnor reached third with one out but was left stranded.

Weatherholtz hurt himself in the bottom of the 5th. He walked Ryan Foster, the #8 hitter, to start the inning. It was Weatherholtz's only walk of the game.
Weatherholtz then committed a throwing error on a bunt attempt by Ryan Hathaway, putting runners at second and third.
Ross Easterling hit a sacrifice fly to make the score 2-0, and back-to-back singles by Nick Barnes and Andrew Stichter brought in another run. John Schraer's RBI single capped the scoring.

Concord put runners on first and second with one out in the 6th, and with two outs in the 7th, but came away frustrated each time.

CU went 0-7 with runners in scoring position.

GAME TWO
BOXSCORE / PLAY-BY-PLAY

Taking A Pitch 243 x 235
The Mountain Lions ensured they wouldn't get shut out again by scoring twice in the top of the 1st. Randy Beard led off and was hit by a pitch, and Keith Morrisroe singled to put runners at the corners. Morrisroe then stole second.
One out later, Bret Blevins blasted a two-run double to give CU its first lead of the day.

Charleston came back with two runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the score. One run scored on a passed ball, the other on Garrett Proctor's two-out RBI single.

Easterling's RBI single gave UC a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the 3rd. But Concord came right back with four runs in the top of the 4th.

Blevins and Webb singled to start the inning, and each advanced on an error by RF Ryan Foster. Wenger drove in Blevins with a groundout, and Nick Sydnor plated Webb with a single to right.
Zach Cloxton singled, and he and Sydnor moved up a base on an error by LF Tim Rein. That put two runners in scoring position for Ian Humphrey, who drove a two-run single up the middle to give Concord a 6-3 lead.

Charleston closed within 6-5 on Nick Barnes' two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the 4th. The Golden Eagles took the lead for good with four runs in the 5th, on two-run doubles by Ryan Hathaway and Easterling.
UC tacked on one more run in the 6th on Garrett Proctor's RBI single.

Blevins and Morrisroe each had two hits to top the Concord offense. However, CU committed three errors, leading to four unearned runs.
