LADY LIONS DROP TWO IN BUCKHANNON

When a softball team plays West Virginia, it must take advantage of its opportunities, because they don't come along very often.

Concord couldn't quite convert its chances in the first game of its WVIAC doubleheader against the defending league champions Sunday afternoon, and wound up being swept by the defending league champions, 4-3 and 8-0 in Buckhannon, WV.

GAME ONE
BOXSCORE / PLAY-BY-PLAY

Sheila Davies Swing 279 x 235
The Lady Lions pounced on WVWC starting pitcher Hillary Perez-Ashley (a 14-game winner) with a two-out rally in the top of the 1st inning. Brooke Bowling singled, and Sheila Davies (right) crushed a two-run home run to put CU up 2-0.

Shelby Carson hit a solo home run in the bottom of the 1st, and a double-steal in the bottom of the 2nd tied the game at 2-2.

The Lady Bobcats took a 3-2 lead on Paige Cumming's two-out RBI single in the 3rd.

Concord starting pitcher Tamara Smith allowed WVWC just one single over the 4th and 5th innings, but the Lady Bobcats scratched out an insurance run in the 6th on Stephanie St. Peter's RBI groundout.

That insurance paid off in the top of the 7th. Rachel Mack drew a walk to lead off the inning, and Ericka Davies doubled to put runners at second and third. Two outs later, Becca Gleason singled to pull Concord within 4-3. But Perez-Ashley retired the next hitter to end the game.

Sheila Davies and Bowling each had two hits to lead the Lady Lions' lineup. In the circle, Tamara Smith suffered the complete-game loss, allowing only six hits but walking five.

GAME TWO
BOXSCORE / PLAY-BY-PLAY

Kaylyn Klatt, Catcher (JM) 314 x 217
West Virginia Wesleyan robbed the game of much its uncertainty by breaking out for two runs in the bottom of the 1st and three more runs in the 2nd.
The Bobcats would add two runs in the 4th and another in the 5th to win the contest by the eight-run rule after five innings.

Bobcats pitcher Kaitlyn Carey kept the Lady Lions in check. The sophomore allowed only three singles and one walk, while striking out eight, to get the victory.

WVWC totaled ten hits, including a two-run homer from St. Peter in the 4th, but also scored runs on a bases-loaded walk, a wild pitch, an error and a hit batsman.

Up next for Concord is a WVIAC doubleheader against Mercer County rival Bluefield State on Thursday, April 14 at the CU softball complex adjacent to Callaghan Stadium in Athens. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 pm. Admission is free.
