Sometimes a baseball team needs some time to get back into a routine. A long gap in the schedule can force a team to readjust to game conditions.

Concord's Baseball team played its first game in a week on Sunday afternoon, and fell behind early to nationally-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State. CU recovered, but ultimately dropped a 7-5 non-conference contest at the Savannah Invitational in Savannah, GA.

The Mountain Lions grabbed the lead with a run in the top of the 1st, when Kyle Webb's double brought home Jacob Mays.

But the Pirates – ranked 32nd in this week's NCBWA poll -- replied with six runs in the bottom of the 1st, a rally that included four consecutive two-out RBI singles.

Concord would get back in the game in the 3rd. With runners at first and second and one out, Josh Wenger launched an RBI double to left. Webb followed with an RBI single. Bret Blevins – playing his first game since being injured late in CU's win at King College (TN) February 20th – added another RBI single to get Concord within 6-4.

The Mountain Lions moved within 6-5 in the 7th, on doubles by Raphael Sanchez and Keith Morrisroe. But the Pirates scratched out a run of their own in the bottom of the inning, on Clayton Miller's sacrifice fly, and restored a two-run lead at 7-5.

Sanchez paced the Concord offense by going 3-4 with two doubles. Webb was 2-3 with two RBIs. Freshman pitcher Ryan Weatherholz turned in his second straight solid outing, allowing one run in 7 1/3 innings of relief. He scattered seven hits, walking one and striking out eight.
On defense, the Mountain Lions were error-free.

AASU starter Chandler Hall improved to 4-0 with a complete game win, allowing nine hits and five earned runs.

BOXSCORE / PLAY-BY-PLAY

Up next for Concord is a quick turnaround to their next game in their Savannah Invitational schedule. The Mountain Lions meet Kutztown University (PA) – ranked 3rd in the NCBWA's Atlantic Region poll – at 10:00 am on Monday, March 7.
