CAN'T WAIT TO GET HOME

CU SWEPT IN ROAD DOUBLEHEADER

Getting back home never looked so good.

Concord's Softball team is looking forward to next week's WVIAC home opener, after suffering two heartbreaking one-run losses at Glenville State Wednesday night.

The 2-1 and 7-6 defeats dropped CU to 0-4 in league play this season, all on the road.

GAME ONE

The Pioneers struck early against CU starting pitcher Tamara Smith. In the bottom of the 1st, second baseman Erin Morgan singled with one out; Smith struck out Christie Hittel, but Lacey Williams tripled to give GSC a 1-0 lead.

With two outs, Rachel Mack delivered a pinch-hit single, and Tiffany Kobordo reached on an error by Morgan. Smith put down a grounder to shortstop Morgan Scarpellini, but before Smith could be retired unassisted, Mack came around with the tying run.

The Lady Lions had a chance to take the lead in the top of the 7th, after Becca Gleason doubled with two out, but couldn't bring the runner in.

In the bottom of the 7th, Carly Caldon led off with a single. Smith got the next two outs, but Morgan doubled to drive in the game-winner.

GSC starter Jessica Fedor limited Concord to three hits. CU was 0-6 with runners in scoring position.

GAME TWO

Concord spotted GSC a 2-0 lead after four innings, but got on the board in the top of the 5th. Smith led off with a single, wound up on third after two wild pitches from Ally Southall, and scored on Sheila Davies' RBI single.

The Pioneers scored twice in the bottom of the inning, but the Lady Lions roared back with a five-run rally in the 6th.

Southall hit Bowling with a pitch to start the inning, and Katelyn Williams singled. A Southall wild pitch moved up both runners, who promptly scored on Stephanie Harper's two-run double that drew CU within 4-3.
Glenville State made a pitching change, bringing in Brittany May, but it didn't slow the Lady Lions.
May was called for an illegal pitch, advancing Harper to third. One out later, Smith grounded into an error by Hittel, the Pioneers' 1B; Harper scored and Smith wound up at second.
Two batters later, Davies launched a two-run home run that put Concord ahead 6-4.

The lead didn't stand up. In the bottom of the inning, Morgan singled and Megan Lesser walked, and Lacey Williams hit a three-run home run that gave GSC another comeback victory.

Harper led the Concord offense by going 2-2 with two RBIs and a run scored. Davies finished 2-3 with a run scored and three RBIs, including her dramatic late homer.

In the circle, Mack gave Concord its second complete game of the day, but hurt herself with four walks.

Up next for Concord (8-12, 0-4) is their home opener, a WVIAC doubleheader against Seton Hill on Monday, March 21. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm, at the Lady Lions' home field, adjacent to Callaghan Stadium. Admission is free.
