MOUNTAIN LIONS COMPLETE HOME SWEEP OF URBANA

Hitting early, pitching late.

The Concord Baseball team put together a series of early rallies to take the lead, then got a solid showing from the bullpen in a 7-6 non-conference victory over Urbana University (OH) Sunday afternoon at Anderson Field.

The win as CU's fourth in a row and capped a sweep of the three-game series against the Bears.

Freshman pitcher Ryan Weatherholtz threw six solid innings of relief to earn his first collegiate victory. The right-hander from Manassas, VA allowed one run on five hits, walking two and striking out six.

The Mountain Lions got on the board in each of the first four innings.

After Urbana reached CU starter Jacob Mays for two runs in the top of the 1st, CU answered with a pair in the bottom of the inning. Mays doubled to left, and scored on Keith Morrisroe's triple. One out later, Morrisroe crossed the plate on a fielder's choice from Randy Beard.

Concord got to UU starter Julius Storey for two more runs in the 2nd. Raphael Sanchez led off with a double, and Zach Cloxton doubled to drive him home. Consecutive groundouts by Nate Watson and Ian Humphrey would bring in Cloxton, and CU led 4-2.

Urbana would move in front with three runs in the 3rd, two of them scoring on Matt Mays' homer. But the Mountain Lions reclaimed the lead with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Morrisroe doubled and Kyle Webb singled to start the frame, and both would score on an error by Storey.

CU pushed across its final run in the 4th on Webb's RBI single, chasing Storey. The Bears brought on Zane Bayliss in relief, and he allowed only one hit while striking out seven in four scoreless innings.

Urbana would get within 7-6 with a single run in the 6th, and got the first two runners on in the 7th. But Weatherholtz got out of the jam and would wind up retiring eight of the last nine batters he faced

Morrisroe, Webb and Sanchez paced the Concord offense with two hits each. For the series, Morrisroe was 8-10, with eight runs scored, six RBIs, five stolen bases, two doubles, a home run and a walk.

Up next for Concord is a spring break trip to the 2011 Savannah (GA) Invitational. The Mountain Lions open their visit with a matchup against the host school, Armstrong Atlantic State, on Sunday, March 6. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
