MOUNTAIN LIONS SWEPT IN SEASON-OPENING DOUBLEHEADER

College baseball teams get no spring training. No exhibition games to prepare for the regular season.

Concord opened its 2011 season against a solid team with two games behind it, and it showed. Tusculum College swept the Mountain Lions 14-0 and 12-3 in a Saturday doubleheader at Pioneer Park in Greeneville, TN, spoiling the debut of new head coach Andrew Wright.

Tusculum started 2011 ranked #12 in the in the NCBWA's Southeast Region poll, and began its season last weekend. The Pioneers won two games, outscoring its opponents 27-14, and were in mid-season form against Concord.

In game one, Tusculum jumped on CU starter Justin Willard for seven runs over the first two innings and would end the game with 15 hits.
That was more than enough support for Tusculum starter Craig Goodman, who allowed only two hits and struck out seven in six shutout innings.

Game two started much the same as the first. Tusculum again scored seven times in the first two innings, this time off Brandon Proctor.
Concord would get on the board in the top of the 6th. Consecutive singles by Jacob Mays, Keith Morrisroe and Josh Wenger brought in a pair of runs and pulled CU within 7-2, but Tusculum responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning to put the game away.
Wenger finished the day 2-4 with two RBIs, while Mays was 2-3 with a run scored.
