LADY LIONS' WIN AT CHARLESTON EXTENDS WIN STREAK TO SIX

Jolysa Brown Shot at UC
Concord's women's basketball team hasn't always enjoyed visiting the Eddie King Gymnasium.

The Lady Lions hadn't won on the campus of the University of Charleston since a 60-56 victory on December 15, 2007.

Saturday, CU paid another visit to the King Gym, and made themselves right at home.

Stern defense and a decisive 13-0 rally late in the 2nd half propelled Concord to a 75-63 victory.  It was the Lady Lions' sixth straight win and it improved CU to 8-1, 6-1 in the WVIAC.

Concord trailed only twice, the last time at 55-54 with 6:31 remaining in the game.  But Camisha Alexander sank a three-pointer on the next possession to put CU back in front.
Jolysa Brown and Anna Truckley hit back-to-back jumpers to put Concord up 61-55, and freshman Rachel Artrip rained down a three-pointer to push the advantage to nine.
Alexander capped the outburst with a jumper that made the score 66-55 with 3:22 to go.

Charleston would close within nine points, but Concord would go 7-10 from the free throw line in the final 2:20 – including 6-6 by Truckley -- to seal the deal.

The Lady Lions went into Saturday's game allowing their opponents to shoot just .348 from the field, the second-best mark in the WVIAC.  In the 2nd half against UC, Concord smothered the Golden Eagles, limiting the hosts to .256 (10-39).  CU held Charleston to .329 (23-70) for the game.

Concord complemented its stout defense with a balance on offense.  All five starters scored in double figures, led by Truckley's 17 points.  The senior point guard from Verona, PA shot 4-6 from the field and a perfect 8-8 at the line.  She also handed out five assists.

Amanda Smith Shot #2 at UC
Jolysa Brown (above left) posted her 36th career double-double, with 14 points and 15 rebounds.  In fact, she got near a quadruple-double, with six blocked shots and five assists.

Amanda Smith (right) shot 6-12 from the floor to finish with 14 points, to go with five assists.

Alexander added 13 points, four assists and two steals.

Andrea Bertrand fought through foul trouble to just miss a double-double, with 10 points and nine rebounds.  She also chipped in four assists and three blocked shots.

Laura Davis led UC with 15 points and five assists.  Erika Rousculp notched a double-double of 14 points and 19 rebounds.

Concord had 22 assists on 27 made field goals, offset by only 12 turnovers.  The Lady Lions forced UC to turn over the ball 16 times.

Up next for Concord is an appearance at the two-day Fairmont State New Year's Classic.  The Lady Lions will take on WVU Tech in a non-conference game on Saturday, December 31.  Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 pm at Retton Arena in Fairmont, WV.

CU opened this season with an 80-43 win over WVU Tech on November 11.
