MBB: ON THEIR SLEEVES

EMOTIONAL OUTBURST LEADS CHARLESTON PAST MOUNTAIN LIONS

Concord's men's basketball team found itself playing a demonstrative opponent in Saturday's visit to the University of Charleston.  The Golden Eagles take their cue from head coach Mark Downey, who wears his emotions on his sleeve.

Saturday, Downey tried to fire up his team with a technical foul early in the 2nd half, and it worked.  UC responded to the motivational ploy with a game-changing 15-0 run that helped to down the Mountain Lions, 82-70, at the Eddie King Gymnasium in Charleston, WV.

In the 1st half, there were two ties and five lead changes and Concord led 38-36 at the break.  But Downey received his technical just :34 into the 2nd half, setting the stage for the rally that gave UC a 51-40 lead with 15:53 left in the game.

The Mountain Lions would fall behind by as much as 19 points before fighting back to within eight, at 78-70.  But time ran out on CU's comeback hopes.

Charleston shot .514 (18-35) in the 2nd half, after CU limited them to .351 (13-37) in the 1st half.  Concord shot .456 (26-57) for the game but hurt itself with 20 turnovers.

Four Mountain Lions scored in double figures, led by 14 points from Javaughn Acree-ManuelNatwan Young (6-10 FG) and Cory Willard (4-6 3-pointers) each tallied 12 points.  Corey Neeley added 11 points.

P.J. Reyes topped Charleston (8-2, 3-2) with a double-double of 16 points and 13 rebounds.

Up next for Concord (5-4, 4-3) is a quick turnaround before a non-conference game against Virginia State on Monday, December 19, at the Carter Center in Athens.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm.

It's a rematch for CU, which defeated the Trojans, 94-78, on November 29 in Ettrick, VA.

Concord will provide Live Stats and streaming video of Monday's game.  The game will be broadcast on News/Talk 620 WWNR, with the audio webcast at www.theticket102.com.

Monday is also the men's team's “Food Drive Game.”  All fans donating of a non-perishable food item for the CU Student Athlete Advisory Committee's holiday food drive will be admitted for free.
