FIVE PLAYERS SCORE IN DOUBLE FIGURES IN WIN AT GLENVILLE STATE

The Concord women's basketball team saw five players score in double figures and used clutch free-throw shooting and defense to defeat Glenville State, 103-94, Tuesday night at the Lilly Gymnasium in Glenville, WV.

The victory snapped CU's five-game losing streak to the defending WVIAC Tournament champions.

The Lady Lions closed out the contest with a 10-0 run over the last 1:40, going a perfect 8-8 from the line, while forcing the Pioneers to miss their last six shots.

Tanisha Wilson sank a jump shot with 1:56 left to put GSC ahead 94-93.  But Mishae Miles fouled Amanda Smith on CU's next possession, and the sophomore forward calmly drained two free throws (left) to put Concord ahead 95-94.

Anna Truckley rebounded a missed Wilson shot, and Beth Deren fouled Smith, who sank two more free throws to push CU's lead to 97-94 with exactly a minute remaining.

Miles missed a three-pointer, Jolysa Brown grabbed the rebound, and Catherine Butcher fouled Truckley.  The senior point guard made both free throws that stretched Concord's advantage to 99-94 with :47 left.

Truckley added two more free throws 19 seconds later, and Camisha Alexander capped the game with a layup.

Tuesday was Concord's first win over GSC since a 62-60 win in Glenville on February 19, 2009.

Andrea Bertrand led Concord with 25 points, to go with seven rebounds and four assists.  Brown posted 23 points and 12 rebounds for her 32nd career double-double.  Alexander added 20 points.

Truckley scored a career-high 14 points, along with eight rebounds, four assists and a steal.  Smith chipped in 14 points, six rebounds and two assists.

Concord outrebounded Glenville State 68-58.  The Lady Lions were 25-38 from the free throw line, compared to 9-15 for the hosts.    CU committed only 14 turnovers against a Pioneers defense that had forced an average of 29 per game this season.

Wilson led Glenville State with 25 points.

Up next for the Lady Lions (3-1, 2-1) is a non-conference contest against Lees-McRae College (NC) on Thursday, December 1.  Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 pm at the Carter Center.
