WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: TOPPED AT WEST LIBERTY

SLOW START HAMPERS LADY LIONS

In the end, it was the beginning that proved to be too much to overcome.

Concord's women's basketball team spotted West Liberty a big early lead in their WVIAC matchup Saturday afternoon, and while the Lady Lions would fight back to take the lead the Hilltoppers would rally back to defeat CU 56-54 at the ASRC in West Liberty, WV.

The home side broke out to a 12-2 lead just 5:17 after tipoff.  WLU opened its biggest lead at 31-14 with 4:37 left before halftime, but Concord had an answer. 

The Lady Lions embarked on a 21-2 run bridging halftime to take the lead for the first time at 35-33 with 14:42 remaining in regulation.

The lead would change hands five times before WLU moved in front for good with 6:09 left.

Concord moved within 55-54 after a pair of free throws from Andrea Bertrand with :35 to go and had a chance for the winning shot, but two jumpers bounced out in the closing seconds.

Bertrand (right) paced CU with 15 points and nine rebounds.  Tanisha Williams added ten points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals.  Jolysa Brown pulled down 14 rebounds.

For West Liberty, Hillary Southworth scored 19 points and Kayla Ayers 16.



Up next for the Lady Lions is a visit to another top-tier WVIAC opponent.  Concord takes on defending conference tournament champion Glenville State on Tuesday, November 23, with tip-off scheduled for 4:00 pm at the Lilly Gymnasium in Glenville, WV.
