WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: CONFERENCE OPENER

ALEXANDER'S 26 POINTS HELP CU DOWN WEST VIRGINIA STATE

Boosted by a key rally, free throw shooting and three double-digit scorers, the Concord women's basketball team defeated West Virginia State, 77-66, in their WVIAC opener Wednesday night at the Carter Center.

The Lady Lions improve to 2-0, 1-0 in the conference.

Concord trailed briefly early in the game, but scored seven unanswered points to lead 14-8 six minutes after tipoff.  CU was ahead 33-29 at halftime.

The game-changing rally came early in the 2nd half and lasted less than two minutes.  The Lady Lions went on an 11-1 run to turn a 44-42 lead to a 55-43 advantage with 13:04 left in the game.  Three points from sophomore forward Andrea Bertrand started the outburst, followed by three-point shots from Rachel Artrip and Camisha Alexander and a jumper by Jolysa Brown.

The visiting Yellow Jackets never went away and closed within 64-58 with 5:45 to go.  But five consecutive free throws by Alexander stretched the lead to 69-58 at the 4:16 mark.  WVSU would get no closer than eight points the rest of the night.

Concord was 22-30 from the free throw line, led by Alexander's 11-12 (.917) performance.  The Lady Lions held the Yellow Jackets to 26-78 shooting (.333) from the field.

Alexander dropped in 26 points – 19 in the 2nd half – to lead all scorers.  Tanisha Williams came off the bench to add 12 points and four rebounds, and Jolysa Brown posted 16 points and 12 rebounds to earn the 32nd double-double of her career.

Asia-Bryanne Greenleaf had 16 points and seven rebounds to lead West Virginia State, which was playing its first game of the season.  Chelsey Davis added 12 points and eight rebounds.

Up next for the Lady Lions is a WVIAC contest at West Liberty on Saturday, November 19.  Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
