WOMEN'S SOCCER: HALLOWEEN NIGHTMARE

SEASON ENDS WITH LOSS AT DAVIS & ELKINS

Halloween is a holiday devoted to nightmares and ghastly visions.

For the Concord Women's Soccer team, their nightmare came clad in a #3 jersey.

Senior Cole Dant scored three goals and assisted on two others, leading Davis & Elkins to a 5-2 win over Concord in a first-round match of the WVIAC Tournament Monday night at Buckhannon-Upshur High School in Buckhannon, WV.

The defeat ended CU's season at 9-8.

Dant paced the Lady Senators' 18-shot attack with eight shots, six of them on goal.  She struck quickly, scoring an unassisted goal in the second minute, and assisting Cate Smith's goal in the 9th.

Concord moved within 2-1 after a D&E own-goal in the 23rd minute, and that score held until well into the 2nd half, when Dant took command of the match.

She scored in the 69th minute – assisted by Emma Davis – to make the score 3-1.  Dant assisted Allison Bogar's goal in the 79th minute that put the Lady Senators ahead 4-1.

Senior Nicole Dirnagl tallied an unassisted goal to draw Concord within 4-2 in the 82nd minute.  But Dant turned CU's comeback dreams into a nightmare when she finished her holiday hat trick with a goal in the 83rd minute, assisted by Allison Dant.

“You have to give a lot of credit to Davis & Elkins.  They have a great player in Cole Dant,” CU head coach Stefani Workman said Monday night.  “She makes things happen and finishes her opportunities.

“I'm really proud of our seniors and the way they finished up the game.  They played until the whistle blew at the very end.”

Monday was the final match for seven Concord seniors – Dirnagl, Kate Armentrout, Tori Faulkner, Emily Gallagher, Alyssa Hessian, Kacey Hildebrand and Tiffany Kobordo.

The Lady Lions concluded their 2011 season with eight wins in their last ten matches.
