WOMEN'S SOCCER: ONE IS ENOUGH

DIRNAGL'S GOLDEN GOAL LIFTS LADY LIONS

The value of one.

The longer a scoreless soccer game remains scoreless, the greater the value of a single goal.

When that scoreless game is a WVIAC contest that goes into a second overtime, one goal means the game.

Nicole Dirnagl lifted the Concord Women's Soccer team with a golden goal in the 103rd minute that pushed the Lady Lions past the University of Charleston, 1-0, Tuesday afternoon in Charleston, WV.

The win is CU's third in a row overall and it raised the Lady Lions' WVIAC record to 3-3.

Both goalkeepers were superb on Tuesday.  Concord's Kacey Hildebrand made nine saves in posting the shutout -- including a denial of Jessica Biggs' attempt in the 100th minute -- and Charleston's Catherine Perry made ten saves.

But Dirnagl bested Perry with a 30-yard shot from the left side that brought the match to a close.  It was her fourth goal in the last three games.

“It was a beautiful goal,” CU head coach Stefani Workman said after the match.  “Nicole is so good with her left foot.  She hit it right on the sweet spot and put it in a place that a goalkeeper can't reach.”

Charleston held an 18-12 advantage in shots, including 10-5 in the first half.  But the match was otherwise equal – both teams committed 11 fouls and attempted two corner kicks.

“The first half was kind of deliberate.  Neither team could really get into a flow,” said Workman.  “In the second half, things really started to open up, and I like how our ladies rose to the challenge.”

Up next for the Lady Lions is a return home for a match against WVIAC foe Wheeling Jesuit on Saturday, October 8.

Kickoff at Anderson Field is scheduled for Noon and admission is free.

Saturday is the Lady Lions' final Saturday home game and is designated as Senior Day.
Concord will honor its seven seniors -- Kate Armentrout, Nicole Dirnagl, Tori Faulkner, Emily Gallagher, Alyssa Hessian, Kacey Hildebrand and Tiffany Kobordo -- in a ceremony before kickoff.
