WOMEN'S SOCCER: IDEAL SITUATION

CU CLOSES REGULAR SEASON WITH WIN OVER SVU

Alyssa Hessian, Pre-Goal 1024 x 753
All things considered, Wednesday went as well as Stefani Workman could hope.

The Concord's Women's Soccer head coach approached the day's non-conference match against Southern Virginia as a final tune-up next week's WVIAC Tournament.  Workman used a different starting lineup, tried various on-field player combinations and got everybody some playing time.

More importantly, the Lady Lions played a steady game on both ends and shut out the Lady Knights, 2-0, in the 2011 regular season finale at Anderson Field.

The win was CU's third in a row and provided momentum for the playoffs, which open next Monday.

On defense, Concord limited SVU to eight shots, prevented the Knights from building any sustained pressure, and goalkeepers Kacey Hildebrand and Emily Gallagher combined for a shutout.

On offense, the Lady Lions tried 13 shots and scored on both an attack and a set piece.

Erika Hoff Goal 1024 x 811

Alyssa Hessian got the first goal, in the 19th minute.  The senior got a through ball (upper left) and fired a shot that deflected off a defender and bounced past SVU goalkeeper Mackenzie Lundquist.

Erika Hoff put in the clincher, in the 71st minute.  After CU pressed the Knights into surrendering a corner kick, Hessian served the ball to the middle, and Hoff headed it home (right).

BOXSCORE/PLAY-BY-PLAY
