HELPFUL BOUNCE PRESERVES SHUTOUT OF BLUEFIELD COLLEGE

It took the Concord Women's Soccer team nearly 70 minutes to take the lead.

It took one kind bounce to preserve it.

The Lady Lions defeated Bluefield College (VA), 1-0, in a non-conference match Monday afternoon at Anderson Field, thanks in part to a sturdy defense – and a sturdier goalpost.

With time winding down, the Lady Rams' Braley Friere snuck a shot past Concord goalkeeper Kacey Hildebrand and appeared to have squared the match.  But the ball glanced off the right upright and harmlessly rolled out of bounds, with :19 showing on the clock.

The Lady Lions carried the play through the first half – outshooting the visitors 5-1 -- but couldn't find the back of the net until after halftime.

A foul in the penalty area by BC's Melissa Hubbert led to a penalty kick for CU's Alyssa Hessian, and the senior blasted the shot past Rams keeper Tracy Muncy in the 69th minute (right).  It was Hessian's team-leading 7th goal of the season.

For the match, Concord tried 11 shots while limiting BC to four.  The Lady Lions also forged a 5-2 edge in shots on goal.  Hildebrand notched her fifth shutout of the season.

The Lady Lions have won seven of their last eight matches.

Up next for Concord is their final regular season match of the season.  The Lady Lions will host Southern Virginia University on Wednesday, October 26, with kickoff scheduled for 2:00 pm at Anderson Field.  Admission is free.
