MEN'S SOCCER: MAKING A SPLASH

FRESHMAN'S GOAL GIVES CU WIN IN DOUBLE OVERTIME

The weather went from bad to worse.  The temperature went from warm to icy.

The feelings went from disappointment to happiness.

Freshman Caleb Bone (left) scored the game-winning goal in the second overtime, propelling Concord past Ohio Valley, 2-1, in a WVIAC match on a frigid, rainy Wednesday afternoon at Anderson Field.

Bone's third collegiate goal rescued the Mountain Lions after they allowed the Fighting Scots a short-handed tally that tied the match with :29 left in regulation.

“That's been the story of this entire year,” said CU head coach Steve Barrett.  “We had the lead, they were a man down, and we let in a goal in the last minute.  But we never gave up.  We stayed with it and got the game-winner.  We're a young team and we're getting better.”

Lucas Lemine With Ball 269 x 235
Lucas Lemine (right, with ball) gave Concord its first lead with an unassisted goal in the 13th minute.  As the conditions began to deteriorate in the face of a driving rain, scoring chances became less plentiful and it looked like the lead would stand up.

The Mountain Lions' chances seemed to improve when OVU's Aaron Rock was sent off with a red card in the 81st minute.  But the Fighting Scots got the equalizer when Dalton Turner finished off a two-on-one break out in the final seconds.

That meant the sides would stay on the pitch after the final buzzer for two ten-minute overtime periods.  Concord took the only two shots of the first OT but couldn't find the net.  That set the stage, however, for Bone's game-winner in the 103rd minute.

The Mountain Lions had the measure of play even before Rock's red card.  Concord outshot Ohio Valley 21-7 in regulation and 26-7 overall.  CU finished with a 12-3 advantage in shots on goal.

Wednesday was Concord's final WVIAC match of the 2011 season.

Up next for CU is a non-conference match against Cedarville University (OH) on Friday, October 21 at Anderson Field.  Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 pm and admission is free.
