WOMEN'S SOCCER: RAPID FIRE

CU TOPS 60 SHOTS IN WIN AT CHOWAN

The word “soccer” and the phrase “ridiculous amount of shots” are rarely used in close proximity to one another.

But the Concord Women's Soccer team got its attack rolling on Saturday, in its non-conference match at Chowan University, setting season highs in shots and goals in a 5-3 victory over the Hawks in Murfreesboro, NC.

Concord peppered the Chowan defense with a remarkable 61 shots, 27 of them on goal.  The host Hawks benefitted from two penalty kick goals to keep the match close.

In fact, Chowan scored the first goal on a PK from Alaina Beasley just 32 seconds after kickoff.  But Concord squared the match less than two minutes later, when Alyssa Hessian scored off a crossing pass from Nicole Dirnagl.

The Lady Lions moved in front when Fiona Mearns buried a header just before the end of the first half.

Chowan leveled the score in the 56th minute when Canesha Bradford scored off an assist from Samira Wilson.  But, again, it didn't take Concord long to respond.

Dirnagl put CU back in front when she beat Chowan keeper Shauna Anderson with a shot inside the near post in the 62nd minute.

Concord pushed the lead to 4-2 on Erika Hoff's breakaway goal in the 68th minute.

Chowan pulled within one after their second PK – again from Beasley – in the 76th minute.

But the Lady Lions put the matter out of reach with their own PK, from Hessian, in the 84th minute.

Concord forged a 15-1 advantage in corner kicks and forced Anderson, the Chowan keeper, to make 22 saves.

Up next for Concord is a return to WVIAC play.  The Lady Lions visit the University of Charleston on Tuesday, October 4.  Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
