The Concord Women's Soccer team knew that a win over WVIAC foe Ohio Valley wouldn't necessarily guarantee it a spot in next month's conference tournament.

But the Lady Lions knew a loss would very likely keep them out of the playoffs.

Concord came through, blanking the Lady Fighting Scots 3-0 Wednesday afternoon at Anderson Field in its final regular season conference match of 2011.  The victory lifted CU's league record to 5-4 and improved the chances of qualifying for the post-season.

“Today didn't clinch anything for us, but it certainly helped,” Concord head coach Stefani Workman said.  “Now we have to wait.  The conference is pretty wide open this year, and we'd love a chance to play in the tournament.”

Freshman Aly James (above) scored Concord's first two goals.  The first came unassisted in the 31st minute, and the second gave the Lady Lions valuable breathing room.  In the 60th minute, James took a pass from Nicole Dirnagl and fired a shot that slid between OVU goalkeeper Abbi Menear and the goalpost.

Concord put the match out of reach in the 67th minute, when Erika Hoff scored off a through ball from Sami Spertzel.

Concord outshot Ohio Valley 11-2, including a 7-1 advantage in shots on goal.

Up next for CU is a non-conference match against Bluefield College (VA) on Monday, October 24.  Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 pm at Anderson Field, and admission is free.
