CONCORD MEN PLAY WELL, SETTLE FOR DRAW WITH D&E

The scoreboard didn't show it, but the Concord Men's Soccer team showed signs of promise and progress in a 0-0 double-overtime draw with WVIAC foe Davis & Elkins Wednesday afternoon at Anderson Field.

Concord outshot D&E 15-10 and held an 8-7 edge in corner kicks, but more importantly, the Mountain Lions were cohesive on both ends of the field and kept the ball in the Senators' half for much of the second half. CU also showed its depth, as head coach Steve Barrett got 17 players into the match, and 11 attempted shots.

The WVIAC's pre-season coaches' poll predicted the Senators would challenge defending champion University of Charleston for the 2010 title.

CU put together several promising forays down the middle of the field in the second half, but couldn't solve D&E goalkeeper Patrick Murphy.

The Mountain Lions' best chance came late in regulation, when Frankie Parks' shot from the left of the penalty area got past Murphy but bounced off the right goalpost.

In the first overtime, Frazer McKinley was awarded a penalty kick after being fouled in the box, but Murphy guessed right and dove to his right to make the draw-preserving save.

Jamie Greenwood #2 800 x 514

Concord keeper Jamie Greenwood made seven saves, none more important than his right-hand deflection of a Senators' header that steered the ball over the crossbar and out of harm's way with two minutes left in regulation.

Wednesday's draw leaves CU at 0-2-1, 0-0-1 in the WVIAC. The Mountain Lions conclude their season-opening four-game homestand with a WVIAC match against Seton Hill Saturday afternoon at Anderson Field.  Kickoff is set for 2:00 pm.
