CU DROPS TIGHTLY-CONTESTED SEASON OPENER

In an evenly-played contest between evenly-matched teams, one play can make a big difference.

Concord's Men's Soccer team was reminded of that in its season-opening match against Holy Family University (PA) Friday afternoon.

The Tigers capitalized on a rare mistake by the CU defense to tally the game's only goal in a 1-0 result at Anderson Field.

HFU attacked to the left of the Concord defense and found a seam in the middle of the pitch. Dodji Freitas centered a pass to Jason Lopez, who slipped the ball to the back of the net in the 61st minute.

Concord outshot Holy Family 9-8, while the Tigers had a 7-5 edge in shots on goal. The Mountain Lions committed eight fouls to HFU's 11, but the Tigers had a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks. Concord goalkeeper Jamie Greenwood recorded four saves, while Holy Family's Mark Ferretti had five.

Even the cards were roughly equal – CU had four yellows and one red, while Holy Family had three and one, respectively.

The Mountain Lions have a quick turnaround before their next match. CU will host East Stroudsburg (PA) tomorrow at 3:00 pm. The Warriors defeated Davis & Elkins, 2-0, in an earlier match at Anderson Field Friday afternoon
