CU FOOTBALL PREVIEW: LENOIR-RHYNE

MOUNTAIN LIONS VISIT BEARS SATURDAY NIGHT

The last time Concord's Football team played Lenoir-Rhyne, it wound up being what CU head coach Mike Kellar described as “a very entertaining football game.”

That might be an understatement.

The Mountain Lions and Bears combined for 1104 yards of total offense (CU 617, L-R 487) and tied the score six times. Concord led 21-7 after the first quarter, but Lenoir-Rhyne rallied to take a 45-42 lead in the game's closing minutes. The Mountain Lions tied the game on Brandon Strupp's 35-yard field goal with :24 left in the 4th quarter, then took a 52-45 lead in overtime on Zack Grossi's six-yard touchdown pass to Thomas Mayo. The CU defense stopped the Bears on downs to secure the victory, touching off a wild celebration at Callaghan Stadium.

The night was filled with big individual performances. Mayo won national player of the week honors after catching 16 passes for 253 yards and three TDs. Grossi finished 29-47 for 371 yards, with four TDs and non interceptions. Brian Kennedy rushed 18 times for 131 yards and two TDs.
L-R QB Justin Sanders carried the ball 14 times for 163 yards and a touchdown (a 76-yard run on a broken play in the 1st quarter) and completed 4-9 passes for 79 yards. Lamont Jones returned a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown late in the 2nd quarter that forced a 28-28 tie at halftime.

Concord and Lenoir-Rhyne meet again Saturday night, in a 7:00 kickoff at Moretz Stadium in Hickory, NC.

Both teams cruised to wins in their 2010 season openers last weekend. Concord rolled up 786 yards in a 72-21 drubbing of Southern Virginia University at Callaghan Stadium on August 26 (Boxscore:  www.wviac.org/custompages/football/10fbHTML/cu826.htm).  The 72 points were CU's most in a game since an 83-7 triumph over West Virginia State in 1966.

Lenoir-Rhyne totaled 631 yards in a 59-10 victory over Chowan University (NC) at Moretz Stadium on August 28 (Boxscore: www.lrbears.com/stats/10fb/lru01.htm). It was the Bears' highest single-game point total since a 59-21 win over Catawba (NC) in 1994.

L-R holds a 6-2 advantage in the all-time series between the two schools.

Saturday's game will be broadcast on ESPN Radio 102.3 FM The Ticket (Hinton/Princeton/Beckley), with the webcast available at www.theticket102.com/.
