BORDER BATTLE

LADY LIONS DROP BLUEFIELD COLLEGE IN FOUR SETS

The Concord Volleyball team left its WVIAC schedule Wednesday night, but didn't have to travel very far.

The Lady Lions visited Bluefield College – only 21 miles from the CU campus, and just across the West Virginia-Virginia border – and came back home with a four-set win.

CU's 25-18, 17-25, 25-21, 25-21 victory was its second in a row.

Concord's front line was stellar. Amber Miller crushed a match-high 20 kills, while committing only one error. Emily Wilson floored 15 kills on just two errors. Rebecca Lovejoy added eight kills.

Helen Thiesen set up the big hitters with 27 assists (to go with five kills of her own). Meredith Shifley chipped in 11 assists.

Concord opened up leads of 14-11 and 18-13 on the way to winning the first set.  Leading 23-17, CU got a Wilson kill from the net, and a back-line spike from Wilson, to close the door.

CU trailed 14-9 in the second set, rallied to within 17-15, but fell to the Lady Rams' closing 8-2 run.

The third set see-sawed. Concord opened a 10-6 lead; BC stormed back to go ahead 16-13, but the Lady Lions rattled off five straight points to go up 18-16 and force the Lady Rams into a timeout.
After the break, Wilson served back-to-back aces to put Concord up 20-16.
Bluefield College would pull within 23-21, but a Lovejoy kill got the Lady Lions to set point, and Thiesen closed it out with a service ace.

Concord trailed 17-12 in the fourth set, but responded by reeling off ten of the next 13 points to move ahead 22-20. BC spent another time out, but again to no avail – the teams traded points, then Concord closed out the set and the match.

The Lady Lions continue their sojourn away from conference play with a non-WVIAC match against Chowan University (NC) Friday, October 1, at the Carter Center. The match begins at 7:00 pm. Admission is free.
