CU FALLS IN HOME & CONFERENCE OPENER

FAIRMONT STATE SWEEPS LADY LIONS

Two slow starts and a fading finish led to the Concord Volleyball team being swept by Fairmont State in the Lady Lions' WVIAC opener Friday, September 17 at the Carter Center.

Concord fell behind 8-2 in each of the first two sets and couldn't hold a 20-16 lead in the third in a 25-13, 25-10, 26-24 result.

CU fell to 2-9, 0-1. Fairmont State improved to 6-4, 1-1.

It was the Lady Lions' first home match of the season, after playing their first ten in road or neutral venues.

Concord hit .000 in the first two sets, combining for eight kills but eight errors. The Fighting Falcons didn't fare much better in the first set (.167) but hit a sizzling .417 in the second.

The Lady Lions got their attack in the third set, opening a quick 6-1 lead, and held off FSU's counterpunch to go ahead 20-16. The Falcons rallied to take a 24-23 lead, saw Concord square the score, then scored the final two points to close out the match.

Helen Thiesen highlighted Concord's performance with nine kills (while hitting .292) and 13 digs. Amber Miller added seven kills and 12 digs. Allie Pennington excavated 10 digs and Meredith Shifley distributed 10 assists. The Lady Lions finished with a .087 team hitting percentage.

Haley Lippert led FSU with a match-high 15 kills on a .323 hitting percentage. Jessica Seevers chipped in 16 assists, and Aushia Beavers 13.

The Lady Lions won't have to wait long to try to even their conference record. Concord hosts Seton Hill tomorrow morning at 11:00 am at the Carter Center. Admission is free.
