CU CAN'T FIND TARGET IN WVIAC ROAD LOSS

Sometimes, it's a matter of not how many, but where.

The stat sheet will show that Concord attempted 11 shots, a scant one fewer than West Virginia Wesleyan, in CU's 3-0 loss to the Bobcats in WVIAC Men's Soccer on Tuesday, September 14.

But the numbers will further show that CU put only one of their shots on goal. Meanwhile, WVWC put eight attempts on net at Wood Street Park in Buckhannon, WV, handing Concord its first conference loss of the season.

Wesleyan scored twice barely a minute apart in the first half in opening a 2-0 lead. At 16:10, Michael Scruggs' pass down the middle set up Diego Michelato, who converted the goal. Scruggs scored an unassisted goal just 67 seconds later.

"Their first goal came on a mistake in the back, and the second goal came on another bad mistake," noted CU head coach Steve Barrett.  "But we didn't crack and played well.  We played with them the rest of the game.  West Virginia Wesleyan is a very good team.

Interestingly, Concord's six shots in the first half came from six different players.

Wesleyan put the match out of reach at 57:25, when Matthew Brown scored off an assist from Daniel Smee.

CU goalkeeper Jamie Greenwood recorded five saves, but the Bobcats' Ryan McDougall had to make only one.

"I'm pleased with the performance, disappointed with the result," Barrett said.  "The bottom line is we couldn't put the ball in the net."
