LADY LIONS OUT AT WVIAC TOURNAMENT

LOSES TO WV STATE, SETON HILL END CONCORD'S SEASON

Sometimes it's not the destination, it's the journey.

Concord's Softball team's first post-season appearance since 2008 didn't last as long as hoped, but still represented a step forward for CU's rebuilding program.

The Lady Lions lost twice on the first day of the WVIAC Tournament, ending their season at 21-26.  But CU's 21 victories were more than the prior four seasons combined, and with a lineup dominated by freshmen, the Lady Lions have a promising future.

Seton Hill defeated Concord 5-2 in an elimination game Thursday night in Vienna, WV.  Earlier in the day, CU fell to West Virginia State 3-2.

WEST VIRGINIA STATE 3, CONCORD 2

One big inning was the big difference in Concord' s season-ending loss to Seton Hill.

The 8th-seeded Griffins (22-26) scored three times in the bottom of the 3rd, and the rally stood up.

In the bottom of the 3rd, the Griffins bunched together three singles to score one run, then got a two-run double from Louanne Wiegand to go ahead 3-0.

Concord came right back in the top of the 4th. Brooke Bowling led off the inning with a solo home run; Stephanie Harper singled and stole second. Tamara Smith sacrificed Bowling to third, and Alex Brown brought her in to score with a sacrifice fly to right.

Seton Hill answered with single runs in the bottom of the 4th and 5th. Kelsey Criner's bunt single brought in Liz Piekut in the 4th, and Wiegand struck again with a solo homer in the 5th.

Meanwhile, Griffins relief pitcher Caitlyn Kamalich worked three perfect innings to keep CU at bay and get the save.

Harper started for Concord and took the loss, giving up nine hit and five earned runs in four innings. Brown finished up with two innings of one-hit relief.

SETON HILL 5, CONCORD 2

Concord committed two crucial errors with two outs in the bottom of the 7th, allowing West Virginia State to escape with a heartbreaking 3-2 victory in their tournament opener Thursday morning.

CU starter Tamara Smith (right) got the first two outs in the 7th, but then

committed an error that allowed Charli Small to reach first.  Brittany Hyatt singled to put runners at the corners, then stole second to give WVSU two runners in scoring position.  An error by SS Alex Brown allowed the decisive two runs to score.

Concord scored once in the 1st.  Kaylyn Klatt led off by reaching second on a two-base error by Hyatt at shortstop, went to third on Becca Gleason's single and scored on a wild pitch.

The Yellow Jackets tied the game on Margaret Osborne's solo home run to lead off the bottom of the 2nd.

Clement put the 11th-seeded Lady Lions back in front with a solo home run to lead off the top of the 6th.

Concord has lost all three meetings against the Yellow Jackets this season and falls to 2-3 all-time against WVSU in the conference playoffs.

Smith scattered six hits and allowed only one earned run in suffering the loss.
