DOUBLE DOUBLE

MOUNTAIN LIONS REACH DOUBLE DIGITS TWICE IN SWEEP

In baseball there's a saying that “hitters get hot with the weather.”

If that's the case, Concord's offense could keep burning for a good long while.

On a sunny, beautiful and hot Thursday afternoon, the Mountain Lions ignited for 26 runs in 14 innings, sweeping defending WVIAC champion Shepherd, 12-9 and 14-6, in a 7-inning doubleheader at Anderson Field.

Concord has scored double-digit runs in four straight games and seven of their last eight. The Mountain Lions, ranked #3 in the Atlantic Region, improved to 13-2. Shepherd dropped to 10-14.

GAME ONE

Concord scored three runs in the first, second, third innings in opening a 9-4 lead. Shepherd pushed across three runs in the 4th and two more in the 6th to tie the game at 9-9.

But in the bottom of the 6th, the CU bats boomed again.

After a Keith Morrisroe lead-off single, Greyson Schram lifted a two-run home run to left-center to break the tie score.
Brooks Cullen followed with another home run to close out the scoring.

Morrisroe, Donovan Huffer, Schram and Cullen – two-through-five in the CU lineup -- combined to go 9-15 with 10 RBIs (4 by Schram), six runs, two home runs and two doubles.

Shepherd 3B Brian Collins went 3-4 with six RBIs, including a three-run homer in the 1st, a two-run single in the 4th and an RBI double in the 6th.

GAME TWO

Shepherd grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the 1st, but their lead was short-lived.
Concord scored five in the bottom of the 1st, two more in the 2nd, then turned back the Rams' late comeback bid with six runs in the 6th to complete the sunny-day sweep.

Two-run doubles from Huffer and Cullen propelled the 1st inning rally. Schram's opposite-field home run – all five of his HRs this season have gone the other way – provided both runs in the 2nd.
In the 6th, Shepherd reliever Kenny Reisinger – instrumental in the Rams' run to the conference tournament championship last season – came in and retired the first batter he faced.
He wouldn't get another out.
Reisinger would allow six earned runs, hit three batters, walk two, give up two two-run hits (a double by Huffer and a single by Devin Smith) and uncork a run-scoring wild pitch as Concord turned an 8-5 advantage into an insurmountable 14-5 lead.

Huffer, Schram, Cullen and Smith – three-through-six in the game two order – combined to go 7-13 with three doubles, two home runs, eight runs scored and a remarkable 12 RBIs.

CU starting pitcher Chastin Akers benefited from the run support to get his fourth complete-game victory of the season. He scattered 10 hits and allowed six earned runs.

SU's Collins concluded a noteworthy day by going 2-4 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored.

The Mountain Lions and Rams conclude their three-game series with a single nine-inning game on Friday afternoon, April 2nd. First pitch is set for 12:00 pm EDT at Anderson Field.
