Tamara Smith Pitch vs WVWC 11 April 2010

(ORANGE AND) BLACK SUNDAY

WVIAC POWER WV WESLEYAN SWEEPS LADY LIONS

Saturday, the Concord Softball team's win over Shepherd (4th place in the WVIAC, ranked 6th in the Atlantic Region) showed CU is capable of competing with the league's top teams.

Sunday, the Young Lady Lions found they don't quite yet match up with the conference's top squad.
Defending WVIAC champion West Virginia Wesleyan visited Athens and earned its 29th and 30th wins of the season by sweeping Concord 8-0 and 10-0, taking each game by the eight-run rule.

Concord (17-18, 5-11 WVIAC) finished its eight-game homestand 3-5, while the Bobcats (30-10, 13-3) extended its winning streak to three games.

GAME ONE R H E LOB
WV Wesleyan 8 8 1 5
Concord 0 1 3 5

The Bobcats went to work early, getting back-to-back solo home runs from Dana Goguen and Kashilia Young for a 2-0 lead in the top of the 1st.

WVWC took command of the game in the 4th, batting around and scoring five runs, aided by two Concord errors. After consecutive run-scoring hits – a single by Alex Whisner and a triple by Shelby Carlson – Concord starting pitcher Tamara Smith left the game, replaced by Stephanie Harper.

Meanwhile, Wesleyan starter Patricia Moreno cruised. Concord threatened only once; in the bottom of the 4th, Kristen McClure singled (for CU's only hit) and Katie Billingslea reached on an error, but Moreno got a strikeout and a 1-3 comebacker to close the door.

In the top of the 5th, the Bobcats took advantage of two walks and two hit batters to make their lead 8-0, and after CU couldn't score in the bottom of the inning the game ended on the run rule.

Moreno, in five innings, allowed one hit, walked one, and struck out ten. Young ended the game 2-3 with a home run and two runs scored.

GAME TWO R H E LOB
WV Wesleyan 10 10 1 8
Concord  0  5 4 6

West Virginia Wesleyan played long ball and small ball to score four times in the top of the 2nd.
The long ball came from Young, who led off with a solo, opposite-field home run to right.
Then, with one out, came the small ball. Desiree Sibera reached on an infield single, and Paige Cummings lofted a bloop single barely into short right, setting the stage for KC Carey's RBI double into the left field corner. Sarah Smith put down a run-scoring bunt single, and Goguen beat out another infield single to bring in the final run.

One inning later, the first two Bobcats reached on a hit batter and a walk, and advanced on a sacrifice bunt. Carey hit another infield single for an RBI and Smith lifted a bloop single into short right for another run. A two-base error brought in two more runs. When the inning was over, WVWC led 9-0.

They'd tack on the last run in the 4th, benefiting from a walk, a wild pitch and another error.

Carey gave WVWC a complete game in more ways than one. At the plate, she was 3-3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. In the pitching circle, Carey worked all five innings, scattering five hits, striking out five and walking none.

Amber Burch cropped head shot (73 x 85)

Amber Burch led the Lady Lions with a 2-2 day at the plate.
