MOUNTAIN LIONS PUMMEL TIGERS

CONCORD'S HOT BATS KEY SWEEP AT SALEM INTERNATIONAL

One of the realities of college baseball is that, unlike the professional ranks, it's not an everyday game.
A team can play well for a series, then have wait for days before having the chance to play again.

Such was the dilemma facing Concord. The Mountain Lions flexed their muscles in taking three of four games at Ohio Valley last weekend, outscoring the Fighting Scots 38-14, but then had to wait through three days off before returning to the field again.

But it was like they never left.

Concord continued their offensive barrage in sweeping a doubleheader at Salem International on Wednesday, March 24th, downing the Tigers 17-3 and 12-1.

The barrage began almost immediately.
Randy Beard led off the top of the 1st inning with a hustle double, Keith Morrisroe followed him with a two-run home run … and by the time the inning ended the Mountain Lions had scored ten runs.
It marked the second straight game in which CU put up double digits in a single inning -- Concord scored 10 runs in the top of the 2nd in a 24-5 win at OVU last Saturday.

The Mountain Lions weren't quite as explosive in the nightcap, but got five RBIs from Devin Smith and still had more than enough offense to secure the sweep and extend their winning streak to four games. In that stretch, Concord has outscored its opponents 61-14 and raised its record to 8-2.

Leading the Concord onslaught Wednesday were:
** Devin Smith, who went 5-7 with eight RBIs, a home run and a double;
** Greyson Schram, who finished 4-4, raising his batting average to .613 (19-31). The reigning WVIAC Co-Player of the Week also doubled, drove in three runs and walked three times;
** All-American Donovan Huffer, who went 5-6, with six RBIs, a double and four runs scored;
** And, Morrisroe who ended the day 5-7, with a homer, a double, three RBIs, three walks and a stolen base.

CU's pitching staff held up its end of the bargain, too.

Drew Bailey
David Allen
Drew Bailey started the first game, allowing only two hits in four shutout innings to get the win.
David Allen was the winner in the second game; the freshman started and allowed one run on four hits in four innings while walking none and striking out four.
Devin Smith closed out the game, and the doubleheader, by allowing neither a hit nor a walk, while striking out five, in three shutout innings.

The Mountain Lions will host Bluefield State in a matchup of WVIAC Southern Division co-leaders on Saturday and Sunday, March 27th and 28th. The Mercer County rivals – tied atop the division at 3-1 -- will meet for doubleheaders at 1:00 pm EST on both days at Anderson Field.
