CONTROVERSIAL DECISION HEADLINES LADY LIONS' LOSS

Concord's Women's Basketball team knew it would have a difficult time putting Saturday's frustrating loss behind them when they visited Glenville State for a WVIAC matchup Tuesday night.

The Pioneers, practitioners of head coach Bunky Harkleroad's vaunted “System," employ a frantic, physical, up-tempo style and feed off the energy of their home crowd.

What Concord didn't count on was more frustration, a controversial scorekeeping miscue, and another difficult loss.

The Lady Lions overcame a 14-point 2nd half deficit, but fell to Glenville State 106-99 in front of an often-raucous gathering at the Jesse R. Lilly Gymnasium in Glenville, WV.

Concord trailed 61-47 just after halftime and 77-66 with 10:23 left in regulation before going on a methodical 22-10 run that put them in the lead.
A jump shot by Jolysa Brown put CU ahead 88-87 with 4:53 to go; a steal and layup by Tenisha Wilson gave GSC a 89-88 lead, but Brown answered with a layup in traffic to get the Lady Lions in front again.

Concord (2-3, 1-3 WVIAC) opened a three-point advantage twice in the final three minutes, the last time coming on a layup by Camisha Alexander – set up by a steal by Brown – with 2:07 left.

Two three-point plays by Kristen Golden and Danielle Woodmore in the span of 30 seconds put Glenville State ahead 100-98 with 1:22 remaining.

With :55 to go and Concord still trailing by two, Sidney Lindsey missed a three-point shot, and Brown was whistled for a foul while battling for the rebound.

That's when the controversy began.

Glenville State's official scorer indicated to the referees that it was Brown's 5th foul, resulting in her disqualification. However, Live Stats posted by Glenville State Sports Information, and the post-game play-by-play printout, showed Brown as having only four personal fouls.

After several moments of deliberation, the referees determined Brown had fouled out and she was forced to leave the game with :51 remaining.

Miranda Reed made both free throws after Brown's phantom fifth foul, and Glenville State (6-3, 4-0) was able to close out the game.

A review of the play-by-play sheet given to Concord Sports Information Director Kyle Cooper by Glenville State SID Jonathan Griffin following Tuesday's game showed that Brown committed her first personal foul with 19:11 left in the 1st half, her second personal foul with 8:12 left in the 1st half, her third personal foul with 16:15 left in the 2nd half, and her fourth personal foul with :51 left in the 2nd half. There was no record of a fifth foul.

The official BOXSCORE & PLAY-BY-PLAY SHEET also shows Brown committed four fouls.

Brown led Concord with 23 points and a game-high nine rebounds before her forced exit.
Lindsey added 21 points, eight rebounds, and a game-high five blocked shots.

Kristin Kidd went for a season-high 19 points. Alexander and Amanda Smith each chipped in 12.

Wilson led all scorers with 26 points (shooting 9-19 from the field) while grabbing eight rebounds. Woodmore added 20 points, also shooting 9-19.

Neither team shot well. Concord was 35-88 (.398) and Glenville State 37-104 (.356). The Pioneers were 9-40 from three-point range (.225) while the Mountain Lions were just 1-11 (.091).
Glenville State outrebounded Concord 67-63, including a 34-26 in offensive rebounds. The Pioneers grabbed 11 steals to three for the Lady Lions.

Up next for Concord is a WVIAC contest against the University of Charleston at the Carter Center Thursday, December 9. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 pm.

The game will be broadcast on the Mountain Lions' flagship station, ESPN Radio 102.3 The Ticket, starting with the “Mountain Lion Preview” show at 5:00 pm.

Live, streaming video will also be provided. Links to The Ticket's on-line audio webcast and the streaming video are provided on the Women's Basketball homepage at www.cumountainlions.com.
