CU PREVIEW: THIS WEEKEND

VOLLEYBALL, CROSS COUNTRY FACE BIG TESTS

As the weather turns colder, the schedule turns hotter for three of CU's teams this weekend. Here's what's coming up….

The VOLLEYBALL team can secure a berth in next week's WVIAC Tournament with wins in a pair of home court matches.

The Lady Lions (8-23, 3-8) host intra-county rival Bluefield State (1-27, 0-12) Friday night at 6:00, take a short break, then host Davis & Elkins (11-21, 3-8) Saturday morning at 10:00.

BSC is in last place in the WVIAC and out of the playoff picture. However, D&E is one spot ahead of Concord in the league standings and a victory for CU Saturday would likely punch a ticket for the tournament.

Concord suffered a disappointing five-set loss at Bluefield State in a non-conference match on September 13.

The Lady Lions met D&E in a neutral-site non-conference match October 3, falling in five sets.

Saturday morning's match will be Senior Day, the final home match for Kayla Martin, Amber Miller and Emily Wilson.

Concord concludes its busy weekend – and the 2010 regular season – with a conference match at West Virginia Wesleyan (10-17, 6-6) Sunday at 4:00 pm in Buckhannon, WV.

The WVIAC Tournament begins Thursday, November 11 at the Charleston Catholic Athletic Complex in Charleston, WV.

Concord's CROSS COUNTRY teams will also vie for a post-season appearance in the WVIAC Championship meet Saturday, at Cedar Creek State Park in Glenville, WV.

The women's 5K race begins at 10:00 am. The men's 8K event starts at 11:00 am.

The Concord women go into the championship meet ranked 3rd in the WVIAC coaches' poll. Danielle Pye is 3rd in the individual rankings, with teammate Chelsea Callaway tied for 6th.

The women have won two of their four meets this season – the Greensboro Pacesetters September 25, and the Concord Invitational October 16. Pye was the top finisher in both events.

At the Concord Invitational, Pye was the only woman to finish in less than 20 minutes. At the Greater Louisville Classic October 23, Pye and Callaway became the first female runners in Concord history to break the 19-minute barrier in a 5K run.

The Concord men are 4th in the coaches' poll. Robby Peters is tied for 6th in the individual rankings.

The Mountain Lions have one victory this season – at Greensboro, September 25 – and is off a runner-up showing at the Concord Invitational.

Both Concord teams hope to qualify for the NCAA Atlantic Region meet in Cary, NC on November 20.
