You've got to be in it to win it. And, after a one-year absence, the Concord Volleyball team is back in the WVIAC Tournament.

The Lady Lions open their first post-season appearance since 2008 with a first-round match against Shepherd on Thursday, November 11 at the Charleston Catholic Athletic Complex in Charleston, WV.

Concord (9-25, 4-10) is the #12 seed and Shepherd (12-17, 10-14) is #5. Their match begins at 11:00 am.

The WVIAC's final regular season statistics show Shepherd has an advantage over Concord in four categories:
Opponents' hitting percentage (.166 to .210)
Kills per set (10.83 to 8.18)
Assists per set (9.90 to 7.33)
Digs per set (14.87 to 10.63)

Concord has the edge in three categories:
Aces per set (1.75 to 1.63)
Blocks per set (1.80 to 1.73)
Hitting percentage (.159 to .152)

Among individual league leaders, Shepherd features Meg Kenny, who's 6th in hitting percentage (.291) and 3rd in blocks (94). The Rams' Lauren Jeschelnik is 3rd in aces (41) and 5th in assists per set (7.75).

Concord's Rebecca Lovejoy is 7th in hitting percentage (.282).

Senior Amber Miller topped CU with 185 kills during the regular season, followed by Lovejoy (117) and Emily Wilson (115). Allie Pennington posted 211 digs, with Miller adding 163. Helen Theisen handed out 393 assists.

Shepherd counters with three players with more than 200 kills – Kayla Walker (248), Kasey Mercier (242) and Kenny (207). The Rams also have five players who went over 200 digs – Mercier (277), Theresa McElroy (275), Walker (253), Lauren Gardner (239) and Jeschelnik (218).

The two squads met once during the regular season, on October 30 in Shepherdstown, WV. The Rams won in four sets (25-16, 25-18, 17-25, 25-12), as Concord was playing its second road match in roughly 16 hours.

Shepherd hit .161 with 50 kills, committing 28 errors in 137 total attacks. Concord hit .145 with 33 kills, committing 17 errors on 117 total attacks.

Walker led all players with 17 kills, backed up by 16 from Mercier (who hit a healthy .308).
Miller paced Concord with 13 kills, with Wilson adding ten.

Last year, Shepherd reached the WVIAC Tournament semifinals, falling to Alderson-Broaddus in five sets.

Each team has one tournament championship – Concord in 1987, Shepherd in 1982.

The winner of Thursday morning's match meets #4 Charleston (18-9, 11-3) in a quarterfinal match at 7:30 Thursday night.
