CU DROPS 1st, 3rd & 5th SETS IN LOSS TO WV STATE

Concord's Volleyball team recovered from a slow start, but could not get all the way back in a five-set WVIAC loss to West Virginia State Monday night.

The Lady Lions dropped the first, third and fifth sets in front of a vocal gathering at the Carter Center. The 25-13, 22-25, 25-23, 18-25, 15-12 defeat is CU's seventh in a row and it leaves Concord on the bubble for reaching the conference tournament.

In the first four sets, the team that started quickest went on to win.
WVSU bolted out to leads of 12-4 and 20-12 in winning the first set, while Concord took leads of 7-4 and 16-10 in the second.
In the third set, the Yellow Jackets went ahead 8-4 and 17-12 before fending off a determined Concord rally.
The Lady Lions ran out to leads of 7-2 and 17-12 in taking the fourth set.
The final set was all square early – it was tied at 5-5 – until WVSU went on a decisive 6-1 run to gain control.

Amber Miller (above right) again paced Concord with 16 kills. Tori Fornadel hit .400 in flooring 13 kills.
Helen Theisen dished out a match-high 41 assists to go with 11 digs. Allie Pennington led CU with 13 digs, with Nicole Atkinson adding ten.

Cameron Lewis led West Virginia State (3-19, 3-9) with a match-high 21 kills and a .487 hitting percentage. Alyssa Graboski hit .333 in getting to 14 kills. Kylie Simonds had 12 kills.

WVSU out-dug Concord 93-49, with four Yellow Jackets reaching double figures – Jessyca Gooch (32), Leisha Salyer (17), Patricia Dimsdale (12) and Hannah Gephart (11).

West Virginia State totaled ten more kills (58-48) on six fewer attacks (177-171). The Yellow Jackets hit .246 to CU's .209.

Up next for Concord (8-21, 3-8) is a non-conference triangular at King College (TN) on Tuesday, November 2. The Lady Lions meet the host Tornado at 3:00 pm, then take on Milligan College (TN) at 5:00 pm in Bristol, TN.

CU returns home for a WVIAC match against Bluefield State on Friday, November 5 at 6:00 pm.
The Lady Lions host Davis & Elkins on Saturday, November 7 at 10:00 am, then close the regular season with a visit to West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday, November 8 at 4:00 pm.
