CU PREVIEW: THIS WEEKEND

VOLLEYBALL, TENNIS, SOCCER & MEN'S GOLF IN ACTION

Here's what's going on this weekend in Concord Athletics….

The weekend begins with a VOLLEYBALL match against Alderson-Broaddus at the Carter Center, Friday night at 7:00.
Pennington Dig vs FSU 9.17.2010 266 x 235

Concord (5-3, 1-3) is currently 12th in the WVIAC standings, which would secure the final berth in the conference tournament.
A-B (10-11, 4-1) is in a three-way tie for 2nd with Charleston and Shepherd.

Friday's match is “Change For Abby Night.” CU players and coaches are asking fans to donate spare change to help Battlers assistant coach Abby Stoner in her fight against cancer (full story: www.cumountainlions.com/news/2010/10/6/WVB_1006104933.aspx).

Both Concord TENNIS teams will play in a doubleheader at Johnson C. Smith University at 1:00 pm Saturday. The meet begins at 1:00 pm in Charlotte, NC.

It's the third of four matches for Men's team's abbreviated Fall schedule.

For the women, it's the final non-conference match of 2010. The Lady Lions return to WVIAC play Wednesday, October 13, with a visit to Bluefield State. CU wraps up the regular season with a Homecoming Week dual against West Liberty on Friday, October 15 at 5:00 pm. After that, it's the WVIAC Tournament, starting October 24 in Charleston.

The Mountain Lions' SOCCER squads are also away from home for a Saturday doubleheader. CU treks to the Northern Panhandle for a WVIAC twinbill against Wheeling Jesuit – the women kick off at 1:00 pm and the men at 3:00.
PK vs D&E 800 x 600

The Concord Men are seeking their first victory of the season. They just missed a huge upset in their last match, taking 4th-ranked Charleston to overtime before suffering a heartbreaking 1-0 loss Tuesday afternoon at Anderson Field.

Wheeling Jesuit is trying to hold on to a spot in the WVIAC's top six, and a spot in the conference tournament. The Cardinals are in 6th place at 5-6, 2-3, just one point ahead of Seton Hill, whom they host on October 26th.

Both sides are trying to snap scoreless slides – CU hasn't found the net in its last four matches, and WJU hasn't scored in its last three.

============================================================================

Much is at stake in the women's match. Both sides have 12 points in WVIAC play, although WJU (6-6, 4-2) has done it in one fewer league game than Concord (4-6, 4-3). A win means a better chance for a finish in the WVIAC's top four and hosting a first-round match in the conference tournament.

CU and WJU, along with Davis & Elkins, are in a three-way tie for 3rd in the conference, behind West Virginia Wesleyan and Charleston. Concord has lost both its matches against the front-runners; WJU fell to Charleston in overtime on September 11, and visits Wesleyan next Wednesday night.
The Lady Lions bowed to D&E, 2-1, on September 11. The Cardinals dropped the Senators, 3-1, on September 25.

CU is looking to end a two-match losing streak – a 3-1 non-conference loss at King College (TN) last Saturday, and a 6-2 WVIAC setback to Charleston on Tuesday afternoon.
Wheeling Jesuit has won four in a row – three of them in conference – outscoring its foes 9-1 in the process.
