Varnet Vincent vs UC 220 x 314

NEARLY STUNNING

CU JUST MISSES BIG OVERTIME UPSET

Oh, so close.

Concord's Men's Soccer team played step-for-step with the nation's 4th-ranked team on Tuesday, but stumbled just once. With it went the chance for an upset, as the University of Charleston escaped Athens with a 1-0 overtime victory as the gloaming fell upon Anderson Field.

Ryan Osborne's goal in the 100th minute gave the Mountain Lions their sixth consecutive loss and raised UC's record to 7-1-1, 4-1-0 WVIAC.

Charleston went into the match at #4 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America's Division II poll.

In an entertaining, up-tempo, well-played match, the Golden Eagles outshot Concord 17-11, but the Mountain Lions (0-8-2, 0-5-2) matched UC in shots on goal at 5-5. CU's solid play in the midfield and the back, along with UC's nine offside violations, prevented the Golden Eagles from building sustained pressure.

Concord returns to the pitch with a WVIAC match at Wheeling Jesuit on Saturday, October 9. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
