The “Sunday Doubleheader” used to be a staple of the Major League Baseball schedule.
Those days have passed, but the Concord Volleyball team revived the concept by playing a pair of non-conference matches on Sunday, October 3 in Glenville, WV.

The Lady Lions fell to Davis & Elkins in five sets, then to the host Pioneers in four.

The first match went the maximum five sets, with the Lady Lions suffering a 25-20, 19-25, 25-25, 23-25, 15-13 defeat.

Amber Miller led CU with 15 kills, with Emily Wilson adding 10. Helen Theisen handed out 32 assists. Allie Pennington chipped in 11 digs.

“We didn't have Rebecca Lovejoy in the lineup today,” noted CU head coach Kate Southcott. “Still, we played at a high level and were in it right to the end.”

Following an unusually quick turnaround between matches, Concord took to the floor again and bowed to Glenville State 25-16, 25-12, 16-25, 25-16.

Miller had seven kills and Wilson five. Theisen distributed 16 assists.

“We ran out of gas with back-to-back matches 20 minutes apart,” Southcott said.

After playing two long matches in the span of hours, Concord won't play again for days. The Lady Lions' next match will be a WVIAC match against Alderson-Broaddus on Friday, October 8, at the Carter Center. The match begins at 7:00 pm. Admission is free.

The A-B match will be “Change For Abby” Night. Fans are encouraged to bring spare change to donate to Lady Battlers' assistant coach Abby Stoner, who is battling cancer. Your donations will be gratefully accepted.
