CROSS COUNTRY: GREATER LOUISVILLE CLASSIC

WOMEN 15th, MEN 26th, AT E.P. SAWYER PARK

In the huge, multi-division event that is the Greater Louisville Classic, the Concord's Women's Cross Country team finished 15th and the Men's team 26th at E.P. Sawyer Park in Louisville, KY on Saturday, October 2.

Strong showings by reigning WVIAC Women's Runner of the Week Dani Pye and Chelsea Callaway helped the Lady Lions to their 15th-place showing in the GLC's Blue Division.

Pye finished 11th (18:43.93) and Callaway 13th (18:45.42) in the 34-team, 287-runner field.  Tabitha Whited was 104th, Rachel Williams 138th, Katie Backus 212th, Cortney Vannatter 213th, Shawnee Carnett 229th, Moe Isihard 231st, Diane Rumrill 244th, Courtney Coon 258th and Micalyn Miller 266th.

"Dani and Chelsea's times are the two fastest-ever for Concord runners for a 5K cross country race," CU head coach Mike Cox said.  "We've never had anyone under 19 minutes before."

Robby Peters topped CU's Men's squads with a 25th-place showing in the 34-team, 328-runner division.  Sterling Snyder was 102nd, Nick Lucento 163rd, Craig Pritt 202nd, Nathan Rees 209th, Brent Roark 210th, Brad Ferguson 221st, Wed McKinney 316th and Taylor Monk 326th.

"Robby's time (25:41.60) was a men's school record," said Cox.  "We went into Saturday with Szymon Rola and Brad Dugan out with injuries, but hopefully they're not hurt too badly.  We had an OK day otherwise."

"We've got to close the gap from our 1-5 runners," Cox said, "and we'll be alright.  After this weekend it's clear we have a chance to do some pretty good things this season."

The Mountain Lions return to the trails on Homecoming Saturday -- October 16 -- in the Concord Invitational at Pipestem State Park.

Other teams scheduled to appear are Bluefield College, Bluefield State, Fairmont State, Glenville State, Mountain State, Ohio Valley and West Virginia Wesleyan.

The women's 5K race begins at 9:30 am.  The men's 8K starts at 10:15 am.
